Southampton Early Career Workshop on Democratic Theory

The University of Southampton is pleased to invite early career researchers (ECRs) to submit papers for an upcoming workshop on democratic theory. The workshop will be held in person on 13th and 14th July 2023. Keynote Speakers: 1.     Ben Saunders (University of Southampton) 2.     TBC The aim of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for ECRs (i.e. graduate students and those who completed their PhDs less than 3 years) to present their research and engage in a productive discussion. We welcome submissions from ECRs who are working in democratic theory, broadly construed. Papers addressing the following, for example, are welcomed: ·       The definition and meaning of democracy ·       The justifications and (un)desirability of democratic governance ·       The promise of different democratic practices/innovations (e.g. deliberative democracy, sortition) ·       Alternative political systems to democracy (e.g. epistocracy) ·       Theories of participation, deliberation, representation and accountability ·       Virtues and vices of democratic representatives ·       Voting ethics ·       Democracy in the school, workplace and international organisations ·       Challenges for democratic politics (e.g. populism) ·       Democracy and social justice Anonymised abstracts (within 500 words) should be sent to William Chan (W.C.Chan@soton.ac.uk), with the email title ‘Submission: Democratic Theory Workshop’. A separate document with the author’s name, affiliation and email address should also be attached. Limited travel bursaries might be available for participants who cannot secure funding from their home institution. Accepted applicants will be given 30 minutes to present their papers. After each presentation, a discussant will provide comments for up to 5 minutes. Each accepted applicant is expected to be the discussant of one session. We highly encourage speakers to circulate their papers (less than 10000 words) to other presenters in advance, to foster more in-depth discussion, although this is not compulsory. Important Dates Deadline of Abstract Submission: 7th June 2023 Decisions of Acceptance: 13th June 2023 Registration Opens: 20th June 2023 Circulation of Paper: 3rd July 2023 Workshop Dates: 13th and 14th July 2023 We look forward to receiving your submissions and to a stimulating and supportive workshop. Please let me know if you have other questions. Sincerely, William Chan Research Fellow Department of Politics and International Relations University of Southampton W.C.Chan@soton.ac.uk
